Short answer: AI assistants cite sources that are easy to crawl, clearly structured, factually specific and corroborated by other trusted websites. To get cited, publish direct answers to real customer questions, structure pages with clear headings and FAQs, add schema markup, keep your business facts consistent across the web, and earn mentions on sites AI systems already trust. This is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
How AI assistants choose what to cite
Tools like ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews retrieve web pages relevant to a question, then synthesize an answer from passages they judge reliable and directly relevant. Pages win when a specific passage answers the question cleanly. A page buried in marketing language, behind heavy JavaScript, or blocked from crawlers is rarely chosen — even if it ranks well in classic search.
The 10-step GEO playbook
1. Make sure AI crawlers can access your site
Check robots.txt. Blocking crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot prevents those systems from reading your pages. Server-render important content so it's in the HTML, not only loaded by scripts.
2. Answer the question in the first two sentences
Start each page or section with a concise, complete answer, then add depth. AI systems often extract exactly those opening sentences.
3. Use question-style headings
Headings like "How much does X cost in India?" map directly to the prompts users type.
4. Be specific and checkable
Numbers, ranges, named tools, locations, timelines and dates are more citable than claims like "best-in-class solutions".
5. Add FAQ sections with schema
Eight to ten real customer questions per important page, marked up with FAQPage schema, give AI systems ready-made question–answer pairs.
6. Use structured data everywhere
Organization, Service, LocalBusiness, Article, BreadcrumbList and Product schema describe your business explicitly. See our schema markup guide.
7. Keep business facts consistent
Name, services, locations, founding facts and contact details should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press. Conflicting facts lead to inaccurate or missing AI answers.
8. Earn mentions on trusted sites
Industry publications, news coverage, association listings, partner pages, review platforms and well-moderated communities are frequent AI sources. Being mentioned there matters as much as backlinks.
9. Publish original information
Case studies with real results, original data, pricing guides and expert explanations give AI systems something unique to cite rather than restating competitors.
10. Consider an llms.txt file
llms.txt is an emerging, voluntary convention — a plain-text summary of your site's key pages for AI tools. It isn't a ranking factor today, but it's low effort and helps AI agents navigate your site.
How to measure GEO
- Test 20–30 real prompts customers would use ("best ERP consultant in Surat") in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, monthly.
- Record whether you are mentioned, cited or linked, and which page is used.
- Track referral traffic from AI platforms in Google Analytics.
- Watch branded search volume — AI mentions often lead to later branded searches.
GEO doesn't replace SEO
AI answers lean heavily on pages that already rank and are trusted. Technical SEO, quality content and authority remain the foundation; GEO changes how you structure and present that content. Read the full breakdown in SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AIO.
